Vidyut can rebuild his life, thanks to you.

By Soph Stephens | Digital Manager

In a rural community in India, 52-year-old Vidyut's story is one of resilience amidst hardship. Living with his wife in extreme poverty, Vidyut faced unimaginable challenges. Their home, a temporary structure made of plastic sheets, offered little protection, and tragedy struck when one of their sons lost his life to a snake bite. Now disabled, Vidyut earns a small income washing utensils at a local eatery, while his wife, once a daily wage worker, has been unable to work since suffering a paralysis attack two months ago.

Vidyut was unaware of the social security benefits available to him and had never been approached by officials for support. During a field survey conducted by our partner organisation, Vidyut shared his struggles with the team. They informed him about the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), a government scheme providing financial assistance for constructing permanent homes. With their encouragement and guidance, Vidyut applied for the scheme at his local panchayat.

The team followed up persistently with government officials, ensuring that Vidyut received the first two instalments of funding. However, when the payments unexpectedly stopped, the team intervened again, advocating on his behalf. Thanks to their efforts, the remaining funds were released, and Vidyut's house is now nearing completion. Soon, he and his wife will have a safe and permanent roof over their heads.

Vidyut’s story highlights the importance of bridging gaps in access to social security schemes for marginalised communities. By supporting individuals like Vidyut, we can ensure that no one is left behind in their pursuit of security and safety.

Your support enables us to continue empowering vulnerable families like Vidyut’s by connecting them with essential resources and advocating for their rights.

Together, we can help rebuild lives and create lasting change for those who need it most.
