New threats to Cofan territory

By Randy Borman | Director, Cofan Survival Fund

The Territorio Rio Cofanes is a titled property belonging to the Cofan Nation of Ecuador, with a total extension of 30,750 hectares. The majority of the territory is pristine montane forests, with its upper reaches rising to paramos and rocky mountain formations over 4500 meters high. Bordered on the south by the Parque Nacional Cayambe-Coca and the north and west by provincial and municipal ecological reserves, it is home to some of the world’s highest biodiversity. Flagship species include the mountain tapir (Tapirus pinchaque) and the Spectacled Bear (Tremarctos ornatus).

The Cofan park guards program continues to do a good job to conserve this piece of land from mining and timber extraction, but a new threat is on the horizon: land invaders for agriculture.

The park guards program continues to need help to maintain and expand its reach against this threat.
