Protect Journalists Under Threat in Afghanistan

Summary

In Afghanistan, journalists have played a critical role in providing local communities with accurate and accessible information. The Taliban takeover of Afghanistan is leaving journalists, particularly women journalists, at grave risk. Internews is providing emergency funds to meet the immediate needs of Afghan journalists and to support them over the long term to continue providing trustworthy information to their communities.

Challenge

The Taliban takeover of Afghanistan is leaving frontline journalists and civil society organization (CSO) workers in danger. Already, there have been reports of threats, assault, and detention against journalists. Local journalists - especially women journalists - are highly vulnerable to targeted attacks. For years, Afghan journalists have provided critical information for their fellow citizens to make informed decisions about their lives. Now, they urgently need your help.

Solution

Internews has supported journalists and CSOs in Afghanistan since 2002. Until recently, these brave men and women worked in a vibrant network of radio, television and online media that reached all 34 provinces. We now urgently seek support to continue to meet the immediate needs of Afghan journalists. Importantly, we are committed to supporting them so that they can continue broadcasting essential life-saving information to their home communities from safe and secure locations.

Long-Term Impact

These funds will help ensure Afghan journalists safety and ability to continue providing lifesaving information for their communities in the foreseeable (and uncertain) future. By supporting these journalists, this project will also contribute to the survival of the free press in Afghanistan.
