Monthly Report: Protect Sri Lanka's Street Dogs: Rescue & Rehome – #68774
Project Title: Protect Sri Lanka's Street Dogs: Rescue & Rehome
Reporting Month: August – November
1. Introduction
During this reporting period, our team at Save a Life continued our mission to enhance the safety and wellbeing of street dogs across Sri Lanka. Between July and November, our focus was directed toward implementing long-term preventive measures in accident-prone areas, especially within Jaffna. We initiated two key safety interventions: preparing a street-dog visibility billboard for installation in Navanthurai, and arranging 20 reflective dog collars to improve nighttime visibility for stray dogs in high-risk locations.
Due to recent flooding in the Northern Province, these activities are temporarily on hold. Once conditions improve, we will move forward with installation and distribution to strengthen the safety of vulnerable street dogs in these communities.
2. Current Status
Although rescue operations were not the priority during this period, our team concentrated on preventive strategies to reduce accidents involving street dogs:
A visibility safety billboard designed to warn motorists and protect stray dogs in Navanthurai is ready for installation. This area has a high number of dog-related road accidents, making this intervention essential.
We have ordered 20 reflective dog collars, which will be tied on stray dogs in Jaffna to ensure better visibility during nighttime traffic. The collars are currently in transit.
Due to the ongoing flood situation, both the billboard installation and collar distribution are temporarily delayed but will resume promptly when weather conditions stabilize.
3. Challenges Faced
• Flood-Related Delays
Severe flooding in the Northern Province has impacted accessibility, transportation, and coordination, resulting in temporary delays in implementing planned activities.
• Increased Street Dog Vulnerability
Flooding has displaced many street dogs, increasing their risk of injury, hunger, and accidents — highlighting the urgent need for the planned safety measures.
• Community Requests
During this period, our team received multiple reports from residents about displaced or injured dogs, reinforcing the importance of continuing preventive and protective interventions.
4. Plans for Next Quarter
• Resume Billboard Installation
Once floodwaters recede and ground conditions stabilize, we will install the Navanthurai street-dog safety visibility billboard to help reduce road accidents.
• Distribute Reflective Collars
The 20 reflective dog collars will be tied on stray dogs in key accident-prone areas of Jaffna immediately upon arrival.
• Expand Preventive Measures
We plan to identify additional accident-risk zones and expand collar distribution and safety signage where needed.
• Feeding Support for Stray Dogs
In response to increased displacement and hunger caused by the recent floods, our team plans to conduct targeted feeding activities for vulnerable street dogs in the worst-affected areas. This will help dogs regain strength and survive until normal conditions return.
6. Thank You
We extend our heartfelt appreciation to GlobalGiving and all our supporters. Your continued encouragement enables us to design and implement protective measures for Sri Lanka’s street dogs. Although weather conditions have momentarily delayed our activities, your support ensures that we can move forward as soon as circumstances allow.
Thank you for standing with us in our mission to create safer environments for vulnerable street dogs.
