Summary

In 2022, the City of Cape Town withdrew rangers from the CT2 troop leaving the baboons at risk. Very busy roads and some intolerant residents, who use high powered weapons to shoot at baboons, resulted in the deaths of at least 4 of the troop and one female has disappeared. We have employed two teams of experienced monitors to keep the baboons off dangerous roads and out of houses for as much time as possible to reduce the conflicts. Please help us to cover the costs of our hardworking teams.

Challenge

The small CT2 troop of baboons has been abandoned by the City of Cape Town who refuse to provide monitors to keep the baboons out of human occupied areas and safely in natural areas. The troop had been "managed" for over 10 years, but now, without rangers to reduce conflicts, the baboons are roaming in suburbs and on busy roads where they are at risk of being shot, run over by speeding vehicles and killed by dogs. Since the CoCT withdrew rangers 4 baboons have been killed.

Solution

By providing experienced monitors to work with the baboons, we have successfully reduced the time baboons spend along roads and in properties and since the teams started working in December 2022, there have been no fatalities, no serious injuries to baboons and no significant damage to property or incursions into homes. Both teams of men had been previously unemployed so we are providing valuable work opportunities as well as keeping the baboons safe and spending more time in natural areas.

Long-Term Impact

This project is significant as the monitors do not use pain aversion to chase the troop, but work to redirect baboons away from areas of high attractants and easy food rewards (fruit & vegetable gardens, vineyards & garbage bins) to safe areas. The teams have shown that it is possible to reduce conflict situations without use of paintballs. With secure on going funding we will provide evidence of alternate successful management as well as ongoing employment and safety for the baboons.
