Dear Friends and Family,
I am so excited to update you today that we have just finished dehorning our 300th Rhino. It's not a once off process as the horns grow back so it is a daily battle but we are proud over the past 2.5 years with your donations we have been able to dehorn and maintain the safety of 300 rhinos.
Nobody wants to see a rhino without horns but this has proven the most effective deterrent from poaching is 'buying time' to help us save rhinos, until the demand from Asian markets and subsequent illegal trades can hopefully be halted. As the horns grow back this process is needed regularly and remains our top priority otherwise these animals would be killed.
We spoke about Little Lesedi (which means light in Tsonga) who was born in the wild back in October last year, she was our first and the world's first rhino born from a rescued orphan mother that had been reintroduced into the wild. A true success and last month out on a drive our team witnessed the brave Lesedi chase off a herd of lions and you can watch the video here
We are unable to open our rescue centre to tourists and visitors which would obviously bring in an income but by keeping our centre closed we are able to ensure minimal human interaction which allows us to make successful reintroductions for these animals into the wild - your donations make this possible and we thank you!
What is next? we are getting to the end of our donated funds so our priority is feeding our K9's and horses to keep up patrols but we hope to raise more funds so we can prioritise our dehorning ofr those that are growing back and to help the emergency response teams to remain in operation and responding to the multiple calls coming through.
Thank you for your support!
