Dear Donor,
Livestock farming supports the livelihoods of many rural households in Buliisa District. However, fluctuations in pasture availability can make it difficult for farmers to maintain consistent livestock nutrition, particularly during dry periods.
To address these challenges, Uganda Wildlife Society supported training for livestock farmers in forage conservation, pasture improvement, and milk handling.
The training introduced practical approaches that farmers can apply to improve feed availability, manage grazing resources, and maintain milk quality. Forage conservation, including appropriate haymaking and silage preparation, can help farmers preserve feed when it is plentiful and use it when fresh pasture becomes scarce.
Pasture improvement can also help farmers manage grazing land more effectively, while responsible stocking and grazing practices can reduce pressure on vulnerable landscapes.
The milk-handling component emphasized the importance of hygiene and appropriate handling, storage, and transportation to help reduce contamination and protect consumers.
These practices connect livestock productivity with sustainable environmental management. Better use of available feed resources can help farmers reduce unnecessary pressure on grazing areas while supporting healthier animals.
We appreciate the farmers who participated in the training and the partners who have supported capacity building in Buliisa.
By strengthening livestock management skills, we are helping rural households work toward more productive farming systems and more sustainable use of natural resources.
