Building a Community-Based Restoration Network

By Priscilla Nyadoi | Project Leader

Dear Donor,

Restoring degraded landscapes requires more than isolated planting activities. It requires local participation, access to seedlings, practical knowledge, and continued commitment to protecting trees as they grow.

Uganda Wildlife Society is promoting community-based restoration in the Albertine Rift and Mayuge through initiatives that connect smallholder households, tree-growing activities, and environmental education.

In Buliisa, the project Empowering Communities for Sustainable Natural Resource Management in the Albertine Rift – Buliisa Region, supported by the Ecosystems Alliance Project, contributed to the planting of more than 195,000 trees with smallholder households.

In Mayuge, restoration activities supported by the American Embassy through the Self-Help Ambassador Support contributed to the planting of 63,000 tree seedlings and indigenous grasses in targeted degraded habitats along Lake Victoria. More than 100 households also received tree seedlings.

UWS is also pursuing a target of establishing 10 community tree nurseries to supply 100,000 seedlings for agroforestry and increased tree cover across the Albertine Rift and Mayuge.

These initiatives demonstrate complementary approaches to restoration: planting trees in degraded areas, involving households directly, and improving local access to seedlings.

Long-term success will depend on suitable species selection, seedling survival, follow-up care, and continued community participation.

We thank the project partners, local authorities, and participating households for their contribution to these efforts.

By linking community action with local tree-growing capacity, we are working toward a future where restoration becomes an ongoing community commitment rather than a one-time activity.

Together, we are supporting greener landscapes, stronger local stewardship, and sustainable natural resource management in Uganda.
