Turning Community Conservation Lessons Into Policy

By Priscilla Nyadoi | Project Leader

Dear Donor,

Environmental restoration is most effective when practical community experiences inform wider decisions about how natural resources are managed and protected.

Uganda Wildlife Society recognizes that lessons from field activities can contribute to stronger conservation policies, more effective partnerships, and improved natural resource management.

Through its environmental restoration work, the Society has documented lessons and experiences and used them in policy and dialogue forums at district and national levels. These engagements contribute to advocacy for sustainable land use and the protection of Lake Victoria's biodiversity and habitat resources.

The experiences generated through community engagement, tree planting, environmental education, and natural resource management provide important opportunities to examine what works, identify continuing challenges, and encourage improvements in conservation practice.

Policy dialogue also creates opportunities for communities and conservation organizations to communicate the environmental pressures they experience and advocate for approaches that reflect local realities.

UWS continues to recognize the importance of connecting community-level action with broader institutional and policy discussions. While changes in policy and practice require sustained engagement, sharing field-based lessons can help strengthen the evidence and relationships needed to advance conservation goals.

We thank our partners, local communities, and stakeholders who contribute their knowledge and experience to this work.

Our ambition is not only to restore ecosystems on the ground, but also to help shape the decisions and partnerships that protect them over the long term.

Together, we are connecting community action, knowledge sharing, and policy dialogue to advance sustainable natural resource management in Uganda.
