Supporting Women and Youth to Lead Community

By Priscilla Nyadoi | Project Leader

Dear Donor,

Women and young people have an important role to play in restoring degraded landscapes and protecting natural resources. Their knowledge, energy, and participation can help build stronger community conservation initiatives and encourage sustainable practices across generations.

Uganda Wildlife Society recognizes the importance of inclusive environmental action and promotes opportunities for community members to gain practical skills in tree nursery establishment, tree planting, and tree management.

Through training initiatives in Eastern Uganda, including Tororo, 100 individuals, primarily women and youth, received training in these practical areas with support from the Global Greengrants Fund.

The training equipped participants with knowledge they can apply in their communities, from establishing nurseries and caring for seedlings to planting trees and encouraging responsible environmental management.

These skills can create opportunities for participants to contribute to restoration projects, share knowledge with other households, and explore small-scale seedling production where suitable markets and resources are available.

Involving women and youth also helps build a broader constituency for conservation. When people gain practical knowledge and opportunities to participate, they can become advocates for protecting trees, improving land management, and safeguarding natural resources.

We are grateful to the Global Greengrants Fund and the participating communities for supporting this important work.

Empowering women and youth with conservation skills means investing in today's restoration efforts and tomorrow's environmental leaders.
