195,000 Trees Planted to Restore Albertine Rift

By Priscilla Nyadoi | Project Leader

Dear Donor,

We are thrilled to share a remarkable achievement from our project, “Empowering Communities for Sustainable Natural Resource Management in the Albertine Rift – Buliisa Region.” With generous support from the Ecosystems Alliance Project, the Uganda Wildlife Society (UWS), working together with smallholder households in Buliisa District, has successfully planted over 195,000 trees to support the restoration and sustainable management of natural resources.

The initiative has placed local communities at the center of conservation. Smallholder households have actively participated in planting and caring for trees on suitable areas within their communities, transforming families from beneficiaries into active environmental stewards.

The planting of more than 195,000 trees represents a major contribution to restoring degraded landscapes within the Albertine Rift, one of Uganda's most ecologically important regions. The trees will contribute to improving vegetation cover, reducing soil erosion, enhancing soil health, supporting biodiversity, and increasing the capacity of local landscapes to withstand climate and environmental pressures.

Beyond the environmental benefits, the initiative is strengthening the capacity of smallholder households to integrate sustainable natural resource management into their livelihoods. By providing communities with practical opportunities to participate in restoration, the project is helping build long-term ownership and responsibility for protecting the natural resources upon which rural families depend.

The project also demonstrates the power of community-led conservation. Rather than treating environmental restoration as an activity carried out solely by conservation organizations, UWS is working alongside households to ensure that restoration becomes part of everyday community action. The involvement of smallholder farmers is particularly important because sustainable land management can simultaneously support environmental protection and community resilience.

We are deeply grateful to the Ecosystems Alliance Project for supporting this important initiative and to the smallholder households of Buliisa for their dedication and hard work. Their participation demonstrates that when communities are empowered with the right support and opportunities, they can become powerful champions for nature.

The planting of over 195,000 trees is more than a conservation milestone—it is an investment in healthier landscapes, stronger communities, biodiversity, and future generations.

Together, we are helping restore the Albertine Rift while empowering the communities who live alongside and depend upon its natural resources.

Thank you for supporting community-led conservation and sustainable natural resource management in Uganda.
