Dear Donor,
Lake Victoria is an essential natural resource for millions of people. It supports fisheries, provides water, sustains livelihoods, and contributes to the ecological wellbeing of surrounding landscapes. Protecting this resource requires collective responsibility and sustained community participation.
In Mayuge District, Uganda Wildlife Society has supported restoration activities along degraded sections of the Lake Victoria shoreline in partnership with Mayuge District Local Government and beneficiary communities.
With support from the American Embassy through the Self-Help Ambassador Support, the restoration initiative achieved the planting of 63,000 tree seedlings and indigenous grasses across targeted degraded habitats. More than 100 households also received tree seedlings to participate directly in restoration.
These efforts are helping communities engage in practical conservation while increasing awareness of the importance of vegetation cover and responsible land management around the lake.
Trees and grasses can help stabilize vulnerable soils, reduce erosion, and improve habitat conditions when appropriate species are planted and maintained. Protecting shoreline vegetation is also important for reducing sediment movement into aquatic environments and supporting healthier lake ecosystems.
Community participation is central to the initiative. When households take part in planting and caring for trees, restoration becomes a shared responsibility rather than an activity carried out solely by external organizations.
Continued maintenance and monitoring will be important to ensure that planted vegetation survives and delivers lasting benefits.
We sincerely appreciate the American Embassy, Mayuge District Local Government, and the beneficiary communities for their contribution to this work.
Together, we are restoring degraded lakeshore habitats and strengthening community responsibility for protecting Lake Victoria's natural heritage.
Thank you for supporting environmental restoration and sustainable natural resource management in Uganda.
