10 Community Tree Nurseries to Bring Restoration

By Priscilla Nyadoi | Project Leader

Dear Donor,

Access to quality tree seedlings is an important starting point for restoring degraded landscapes and increasing tree cover. For many rural households, however, the availability of suitable planting materials can determine whether they are able to participate in restoration and agroforestry.

Uganda Wildlife Society (UWS) is promoting a community-centered approach to address this challenge through an initiative targeting the establishment of 10 community tree nurseries to supply 100,000 seedlings across the Albertine Rift and Mayuge.

The initiative aims to bring seedling production closer to farming communities, making it easier to integrate trees into appropriate farming systems and local restoration activities. Community nurseries can also provide practical learning opportunities in seed collection, seedling propagation, nursery maintenance, and preparation for transplanting.

The planned seedlings will support agroforestry and efforts to increase tree cover. When suitable species are integrated into farming systems, trees can contribute to soil protection, biodiversity, shade, and longer-term livelihood opportunities.

Local participation is essential to the success of this approach. Community members who help establish and manage nurseries can build valuable skills and develop a stronger sense of ownership over restoration efforts.

Establishing nurseries is only the beginning. Seedling quality, species suitability, timely distribution, and follow-up monitoring will all be important in ensuring that the initiative delivers lasting benefits.

We appreciate the communities and partners supporting this vision.

Our goal is to make tree growing a locally driven activity, helping rural households access seedlings and become active participants in restoring Uganda's landscapes.

Thank you for supporting community-led conservation and sustainable agroforestry.
