Growing Trees for Biodiversity and Resilient Lands

Buliisa Smallholder Farmers: Growing Trees for Biodiversity and Resilient Landscapes

Dear Donor,

The Albertine Rift is an ecologically important region where biodiversity conservation and sustainable livelihoods must go hand in hand. Empowering local communities to manage their natural resources responsibly is essential to protecting this landscape.

Through the project Empowering Communities for Sustainable Natural Resource Management in the Albertine Rift – Buliisa Region, Uganda Wildlife Society worked with smallholder households to advance community-based restoration and tree growing.

With support from the Ecosystems Alliance Project, the initiative contributed to the planting of more than 195,000 trees with smallholder households in Buliisa District.

The scale of this achievement demonstrates the potential of working directly with rural communities to expand tree cover and promote sustainable land management.

Trees can help improve vegetation cover, protect soils, provide habitat, and contribute to climate resilience. Depending on species selection and management, they can also offer useful products that support household needs and livelihood diversification.

Community participation is central to ensuring that trees are not simply planted but also protected and maintained. Farmers have an important role in deciding how trees can be integrated into their land use while balancing agricultural needs and environmental benefits.

UWS is grateful to the Ecosystems Alliance Project and participating households for contributing to this important work.

Continued monitoring of tree survival and growth will be important to understanding the restoration benefits achieved over time.

More than 195,000 trees planted represents a significant restoration milestone and a foundation for continued community action in the Albertine Rift.

Together, we are working toward healthier landscapes, stronger local stewardship, and sustainable management of Uganda's natural resources.
