Protecting Tororo Rock Through Practical Habitat

By Priscilla Nyadoi | Project Leader

Dear Donor,

Natural habitats are essential for biodiversity, healthy soils, and ecological resilience. When vegetation is lost or degraded, restoration can help recover important environmental functions and improve the condition of affected landscapes.

In Tororo District, Eastern Uganda, 6,000 tree seedlings were planted in degraded parts of the Tororo Rock Habitat Ecosystem as part of efforts to restore vegetation and promote environmental conservation.

This intervention represents a practical step toward improving tree cover in targeted areas. As suitable seedlings become established, they can contribute to soil stabilization, carbon storage, and the development of vegetation that supports local biodiversity.

Restoration also requires long-term attention. Young trees may be affected by drought, grazing, fire, and other environmental pressures. Protecting seedlings and monitoring their survival are therefore essential to achieving lasting benefits.

UWS has also supported local capacity building through training for 100 individuals, primarily women and youth, on tree nursery establishment, planting, and management, with support from the Global Greengrants Fund.

Together, practical restoration and skills development can help strengthen community participation in environmental conservation.

We are grateful to the partners and community members who contribute to protecting the Tororo Rock landscape.

The planting of 6,000 seedlings is an important step toward habitat recovery. Continued care will help turn that initial effort into lasting environmental value.

Thank you for supporting conservation and community stewardship in Tororo.
