Dear Donor,
Fishing communities depend on healthy lakes and rivers for food, income, and employment. Supporting their livelihoods while protecting aquatic ecosystems requires appropriate equipment, responsible practices, and effective community participation.
Uganda Wildlife Society has supported fishing communities in Buliisa and Mayuge Districts with standard fishing nets and a speedboat engine intended to facilitate fishing activities and water transportation.
In Buliisa, nine Beach Management Units also received fishing equipment: Kabolwa, Karakaba, Bugoigo, Piida A, Piida B, Walukuba, Nyamukunta, Wasenko, and Kalolo. Each unit was supplied with 51 pieces of legal fishing nets and 20 spools.
This assistance is intended to improve access to appropriate fishing equipment and support more efficient fishing activities. Equipment must meet applicable specifications and be used in compliance with fisheries regulations to contribute to responsible resource use.
The speedboat engine is intended to make transportation on the water easier, while its safe operation and maintenance will be important for continued use.
Long-term fisheries sustainability also depends on protecting fish breeding areas, avoiding prohibited gear, and working with Beach Management Units and relevant authorities.
We are grateful to the Ecosystems Alliance Project and the fishing communities participating in these initiatives.
Supporting fisherfolk and protecting aquatic resources must go hand in hand. We are working toward fishing practices that sustain livelihoods without compromising the natural systems that support them.
Thank you for supporting community-based fisheries management in Uganda.
