Dear Donor,
We are pleased to share an important achievement in our efforts to support fishing communities and promote sustainable fisheries management in Buliisa and Mayuge Districts, Uganda.
Fishing is a vital source of food, income, and employment for many households living along Uganda's lakes. However, fishing communities often face challenges accessing appropriate fishing equipment and reliable transportation, which can affect their productivity, safety, and ability to transport their catch.
To help address these challenges, fisherfolk communities in Buliisa and Mayuge Districts received support in the form of standard fishing nets and a speedboat engine. This assistance is intended to improve access to appropriate fishing equipment, facilitate fishing activities, and make transportation on the water easier.
The provision of standard fishing nets can help fishers use equipment that complies with applicable fisheries regulations, provided the nets meet the required specifications and are used responsibly. Promoting appropriate fishing gear is important for reducing destructive fishing practices and protecting fish populations and aquatic habitats.
The speedboat engine is intended to improve water transportation, helping fishing communities move more efficiently during fishing activities and transport their catch. Better transportation can help reduce logistical challenges and support the movement of fish to landing sites and markets, although the actual benefits depend on safe operation, maintenance, and local conditions.
Beyond providing equipment, this intervention highlights the importance of empowering fishing communities with practical resources that support their livelihoods while encouraging responsible management of aquatic ecosystems. Sustainable fisheries are essential not only for the families who depend directly on fishing, but also for food security, local economies, and the wellbeing of future generations.
We recognize that fishing equipment alone cannot guarantee sustainable fisheries. Continued awareness, compliance with fisheries regulations, responsible harvesting, and cooperation with Beach Management Units and relevant authorities remain essential to protecting fish stocks and aquatic biodiversity.
We sincerely appreciate the partners and supporters who make these community-based initiatives possible, as well as the fisherfolk communities in Buliisa and Mayuge for their continued efforts to sustain their livelihoods and protect the natural resources upon which they depend.
Together, we are supporting fishing communities, improving access to appropriate fishing equipment, and promoting responsible fisheries management for healthier aquatic ecosystems and more resilient livelihoods.
Thank you for supporting community-led conservation and sustainable natural resource management in Uganda.
