Empowering Students to Think Critically

By Priscilla Nyadoi | Project Leader

Dear Donor,

Environmental education is most valuable when students have opportunities to ask questions, examine challenges, and explore possible solutions.

Uganda Wildlife Society organized more than 15 student debates in schools to help learners understand their environment and the importance of sustainable natural resource management.

The debates created opportunities for students to discuss environmental issues, exchange perspectives, and develop arguments about the responsibilities individuals and communities have toward nature.

Topics such as deforestation, biodiversity conservation, pollution, climate change, and sustainable use of natural resources can help learners connect classroom knowledge with challenges in their own communities.

Debates also help students develop research, communication, listening, and critical-thinking skills. These skills can support their participation in school environmental clubs, community initiatives, and future conservation activities.

By encouraging learners to examine different perspectives, the activities promote a deeper understanding of why environmental problems occur and how collective action can help address them.

We appreciate the schools, teachers, students, and partners who made these activities possible.

More than 15 school debates have helped create spaces for young people to engage with environmental issues and consider their role in protecting nature.

By investing in environmental education today, we are encouraging young people to become informed and responsible stewards of Uganda's natural resources.
