Practical Skills for Sustainable Livestock Farming

By Priscilla Nyadoi | Project Leader

Dear Donor,

Healthy livestock and well-managed grazing resources are important to rural livelihoods. However, farmers can face challenges when pasture becomes scarce or when livestock feed and milk-handling practices are not managed effectively.

Uganda Wildlife Society supported livestock farmers in Buliisa District with training in forage conservation, pasture improvement, and milk handling.

The training introduced practical approaches to conserving feed for periods when fresh pasture is less available, improving grazing resources, and maintaining better hygiene when handling milk.

Forage conservation can help farmers preserve available feed for later use, while pasture improvement and responsible grazing can support more effective use of land. Good milk-handling practices are also important for reducing contamination risks and protecting consumers.

These skills connect agricultural livelihoods with sustainable natural resource management. Improving how farmers use available feed resources can help reduce pressure on grazing areas, although the environmental benefits depend on how practices are implemented locally.

Farmers' continued application of these techniques will be important in translating training into practical results.

We thank the participating farmers and partners who support capacity building in Buliisa.

By strengthening practical farming skills, we are helping livestock-keeping households work toward more resilient livelihoods and responsible use of natural resources.

Thank you for supporting rural communities and sustainable agriculture.
