Summary

The project aims to verify the presence of the Arabian leopard, assess the population condition, and combat trafficking and killing during the project implementation period. In coordination with the Environmental Protection Authority, local authorities, and parties to the armed conflict. The results of the research will provide data on the numbers of the Arabian leopard. By determining the extent of the presence and spread of Arabian leopard groups in the governorates and main areas.

Challenge

Since the outbreak of the armed conflict in Yemen at the end of 2014, there were many Arabian leopards that have been subjected to over-hunting both in their original habitats and the natural protected areas where they reside, according to the cases monitored by the organization according to Sanid Organization Nature conservation sector SONCS, the most important areas in which leopards were subjected to over-hunting and illegal trade were the governorates of ((Amran- Hajjah- Al Bayda - Al Dhalea

Solution

This project will verify the presence of the Arabian leopard and assess the status of the population. Results of the research will provide data about the Arabian Leopard population in general. By clearly establishing the existence and extent of the Arabian leopard population in (Al-Wadaa / Amran Governorate, Wadi Shars / Hajjah Governorate, Al-Dhabianiya / Al-Bayda Governorate).

Long-Term Impact

The Arabian Leopard Project aims to succeed in achieving its goals by ensuring an increase in the numbers of wild Arabian leopards in Yemen through increasing public awareness, understanding, empathy, commitment and participation in the conservation of Arabian leopards and lobbying for the establishment of protected areas for wild Arabian leopards and their prey. Conduct an accurate census of Arabian leopards in Yemen.
