Thank you for supporting David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation through GlobalGiving.
Over the past six months, David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF) have continued to work alongside our ground-based conservation partners to restore and recover Murchison Fall National park, a key lion habitat in Uganda.
DSWF funding has focused on implementing a comprehensive communications system in the park to increase the efficiency of law enforcement efforts in Murchison Falls. Despite considerable disruptions due to lockdowns, the flooding of the River Nile, and non-stop rains, the project is ahead of schedule. The new Murchison Falls communications system now cover 90% of the park as opposed to the previous 10% allowing for effective ranger communication and faster response times for wildlife conflict and poaching reports.
Through utilising the new communications technology, our ground-based conservation partners have been able to unearth large poaching gangs who has previously been able to hide in certain regions of the park. Through coordinated ambushes and sweeps, a number of these poachers have now been arrested.
Our ground-based conservation partners are now upscaling the collaring of lions in the park and have recently placed satellite collars on three lions. These collars are directly linked to the new communications system and the Operations room, providing 24/7 locations of the lions to the team. With poachers now targeting lions as well as bushmeat – this is critical to inform law enforcement efforts and protect lions in the region.
The Bigger Picture
Over the past 12 months, DSWF have continued our 37-year legacy of providing unwavering support to protect some of the world’s most endangered species. Over the course of 2022 we will continue to support our long-term conservation partners to protect wildlife, tackle wildlife crime and reduce poaching threats alongside engaging and supporting more community groups working to protect wildlife.
Thanks to your help, we have granted over £11 million in direct conservation support to turn the tide on extinction.
