We're delighted share our latest update from Pelorus Foundation's local grass-roots partner PCRF. Despite formidable challenges, the local team has successfully established a brand new pangolin research centre all thanks to incredible support from generous donors and the unwavering dedication of the local San community.
Here is the latest field update direct from Kelsey, Founder PCRF:
Pangolin trafficking is currently at an all-time high, and our efforts are more critical than ever.
Recently, we received a pangolin, which we named Penny, rescued from poachers while foraging for ants and termites. Thanks to the swift action of local law enforcement and government authorities, Penny was rescued from a horrific ordeal - imprisoned in a box without food, water, and basic care. When she arrived at the rehabilitation centre, she was in dire straits - scared, confused, and covered in her own waste. Weak, dehydrated, emaciated, and filthy, Penny received immediate veterinary attention.
We discovered she was pregnant, but tragically she had already lost her baby with the stress of her ordeal.
The team provided Penny with daily care, and with time she began foraging again, regaining her weight and strength. Displaying newfound confidence as she explored her surroundings, Penny was on the road to recovery. After two weeks of rehabilitation she was ready to return to the wild.
Rehabilitating pangolins is a meticulous process to ensure they have the right environment for burrowing and foraging. During a safety check the next morning, the team discovered Penny had dug a burrow too shallow for her protection, prompting a search for a more secure location for her.
Penny's journey is just one of many, and the dedicated local community ranger team continues to monitor rehabilitated pangolins, to ensure their safety.
We look forward to sharing more news in the future.
