Summary

Pangolins are the most illegally trafficked mammal on Earth. Our aim is to counter the wildlife trafficking of pangolins and to improve the long-term survival of the species in the wild. By disrupting organised criminal syndicates involved in the trafficking of pangolins in Africa, empowering law enforcement officials and funding demand reduction campaigns in Asia, DSWF works at all levels of the illegal wildlife crime cycle to ensure the survival of this 80-million-year-old species.

Challenge

The elusive pangolin is THE most trafficked mammal in the world. With over one million pangolins illegally killed in the last decade, only immediate intervention will prevent pangolin extinction - before we've even had a chance to understand their importance to our ecosystems. Relentlessly targeted on all fronts for their parts, as well as for bush meat or being brutally killed on electric fences, human actions will result in the pangolin's extinction within a decade unless we act now.

Solution

DSWF works at all levels of the illegal wildlife chain to protect pangolins and reduce demand for them on the black market, and as a consumer product. We work in both Africa and Asia to prevent poaching at its source, funding research, education and law enforcement efforts to tackle illegal trafficking. By supporting wildlife rangers on the ground with training and equipment, and working alongside local communities, we can directly prevent the poaching and trafficking of pangolins.

Long-Term Impact

Our ongoing pangolin conservation work continues to discourage poaching, increase prosecution levels and empower communities to not partake in the consumption of pangolin parts and their derivatives. DSWF's support also aims to stop the demand of pangolin products, help change consumer behaviour in Asia and inform people about the need to protect pangolin populations to avoid the extinction of this incredible species.
