Protecting Pangolins - January 2021 Update

By Tabitha Moore | Supporter Care and Database Executive

Thank you for choosing to protect pangolins in their natural habitats. You are helping our ground-based conservation partners across Africa and Asia adapt to the new challenges they are facing because of the pandemic.

To reduce the demand for pangolin parts and their derivatives, we help fund public awareness campaigns to debunk the false medicinal value of pangolin scales and build support for the conservation of these species. As a result of Covid-19, many of our planned activities were initially postponed. However, our partners very quickly adapted.

In China, we helped to fund a series of TV adverts warning of pangolin consumption which have been played 590 million times. We also contributed to 25,000 outdoor digital screens and 250+ billboards accross 14 cities aimed at reducing consumer demand and influencing long-term behaviour change.

In Vietnam, we also helped to fund a series of public service announcements about the pangolin that highlighted the connection between public health and the illegal wildlife trade. This included a series of animated videos, billboards and social media campaigns.

Wildlife crime analysts have reported a notable reduction in pangolin seizures since December 2019. This is more than likely due to the success of awareness campaigns and the increased media spotlight on pangolins. Thank you for making these campaigns possible.
