Protecting Pangolins

As we move into the spring of 2026, we are pleased to share the ongoing success of our pangolin conservation programmes—progress made possible through your continued support, which remains essential in protecting one of the world’s most at risk species.

Our conservation field partner has made extraordinary strides on the ground in the Mara in protecting pangolins.

Major Milestones in Habitat Protection Your support has allowed our partners to secure over 5,000 hectares under conservation leases and forest payment agreements. This achievement has successfully created two dedicated habitat blocks for the giant ground pangolin and the diverse wildlife that shares its home. We are also proud to share that 193 local landowners have now officially committed their land to conservation as a primary use, ensuring a safer future for these "scaly giants".

In the past year, our partners—in collaboration with the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and local conservancies—responded to 84 wildlife casualties with critical veterinary intervention. To stay ahead of threats, they have established a centralised control room for real-time monitoring and integrated pangolin telemetry data into the Earth Ranger platform. This technology allows them to track movements and assess risks instantly.

Conservation in a changing landscape remains difficult. In December 2025, our conservation partners reported tragically losing two pangolins to incidents involving electric fences. In response, our partners have already de-electrified 121 km of fencing in agricultural areas to create safer corridors. They are also currently monitoring an estimated 27 remaining individuals in the area, having successfully tagged three more pangolins in early 2026 with advanced VHF and satellite capabilities.

The mission is shifting from simple landscape protection to integrated species-level security. To ensure the survival of this population, goals for the coming year include:

• Expanding protected habitat to reach a goal of 10,000 hectares.
• Completing the tagging of all remaining individuals to ensure 24/7 monitoring.
• Installing a network to significantly improve telemetry coverage across the region.
• Strengthening conservation boundaries to further reduce fence-related mortality.
