Summary

Rhinos have lived on earth for over 40 million years. However, in less than a decade more than 7,000 have been lost to the poaching epidemic across Africa alone with their horn now rivalling the price of gold on the black market. By funding monitoring and research-based projects, anti-poaching and species protection operations and reintroduction programmes across both Africa and Asia, David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF) continues to provide an unwavering voice for rhinos in the wild.

Challenge

Used in traditional medicines and as a status symbol in Asia, consumer demand for rhino horn is higher than ever before, giving poachers and criminal syndicates a reason to kill and trade rhinos. Habitat loss and human encroachment are also on the rise threatening wild populations. Rhino deaths have reached an unsustainable tipping point and unless we act now we will see the extinction of this iconic species from the wild within our lifetime.

Solution

DSWF provides vital funds to ground-based conservation partners in Africa and Asia to support anti-poaching and rhino protection initiatives on the frontline of conservation efforts. In Nambia we protect the last free ranging population of desere adapted black rhino and with our support our partners have gone over 30 months with no rhino poaching across the region. In Asia we support rangers patrolling rhino bearing habitats and run demand reduction campaigns to halt illegal wildlife trade.

Long-Term Impact

DSWF has provided an unwavering voice for rhinos in the wild since our inception almost 40 years ago. Our holistic approach to conservation which engages in all aspects of the wildlife crime cycle and engages with local communities is helping to pave the way for a more sustainable future for rhinos in the wild. Through our work black rhino populations in our protected areas are growing and with your help we can continue to protect more habitat and more rhinos from extinction.
