The mysterious snow leopard is known as the ghost of the Asian mountains. The biggest threat to them, is us, and our impact on their habitat. These elusive cats are threatened by habitat fragmentation as human populations continue to grow and the climate crisis intensifies. By funding holistic initiatives, DSWF works alongside communities, governments and law enforcement experts in Asia to provide snow leopards with the greatest form of protection.
Human population numbers have doubled in the last 40 years, resulting in rapid human settlement, commercial and agricultural expansion. This loss of habitat has lead to a decrease in prey populations, prompting snow leopards to attack livestock, which leads to retaliatory killings from farmers. The killing and capture of snow leopards for the illegal wildlife trade is also a growing concern. Demand for their fur and bones, especially as a substitute for tiger parts, is on the rise.
We partner with ground-based conservation experts in Mongolia and Kyrgyzstan to fund holistic conservation initiatives. Working alongside communities, governments and conservation experts to ensure snow leopards have a bright future. We work to protect existing snow leopard habitats by ensuring key areas are protected without threats from human and industrial encroachment. Without the room they need to hunt and survive, populations don't stand a chance of recovering.
Taking steps to understand the populations of snow leopards that remain in the wild is essential in order to protect them and their habitats effectively long term. DSWF supports an ongoing rigorous scientific study to further developing scientific data about snow leopards. DSWF continue to support community-based income-generating programmes in key snow leopard habitats designed to support both wildlife and local communities long term to raise conservation awareness in children and adults alike.
