A new forest corridor and how to protect it!

By Adi Soni | Programmes and Office Assistant

To further expand and protect habitat corridor reforestation in the Sainte Luce Littoral Forest, excitingly SEED will establish a fifth corridor, clearing land and planting Acacia mangium seedlings. The installation of a firebreak will cover an additional 5m on either side of the corridor, meaning the corridor will stand at 230m x 40m, with approximately 1655 Acacia seedlings to be planted. We can assume that Acacia trees will start providing shade between years three and five. The Acacia trees will also be ready for sustainable harvest by landowners after a minimum of five years, increasing community access to a sustainable wood resource.

Communities and project stakeholders have identified the urgent need for fire mitigation education and capacity building. SEED conducted a survey last year in which 90% of stakeholders cited bush fires, burn agriculture, and logging as the main threats to the Sainte Luce Littoral Forest. During a community needs assessment, 50% of community members raised the need for fire mitigation education. With recent fires in the area, fire mitigation is of great concern and a key priority to the community. In response, to protect the corridors, a local law (a ‘dina’) will be established. The implementation of this local law will be overseen by the local forest management patrol, who have been working closely with SEED throughout the project’s duration.

In late November, there was a devastating bushfire in Sainte Luce. The blaze, although started accidentally, consumed several wetlands and many square kilometres of land. The firebreaks around forest fragment S9 stopped the fire from spreading further, protecting that forest fragment and demonstrating the effectiveness and necessity of firebreaks. It is SEED’s hope that the establishment of a fifth corridor, as well as mobilisation events and consistent collaboration with local forest management bodies, will conclude in greater forest security as regarded by community members.
