Across Madagascar, 90% of original littoral forests have been lost due to human activities. Between 1950 and 2005, the littoral forest of Anosy declined by 50%, primarily because of local resource use. Anthropogenic activities, fragmentation, and degradation of the remaining Saint Luce Littoral Forest threaten the habitat of numerous species, genetically isolating sub-populations, and contribute to increased mortality and risk of extinction.
In response to this situation, SEED Madagascar, as part of Project Ala I, has engaged in reforestation activities reconnecting the forest habitats creating a livable home for lemurs and other animals that were driven away. Phase II of the project is building on the success of the first phase by planting 8,520m² with Acacia and by expanding fire prevention and mitigation activities.
In order to identify community needs, focus groups and surveys were conducted, which explored community perceptions of threats to sustainable forest management. Moreover, SEED focused on building capacity for the local community by promoting sustainable, locally-led forest management structures. Key to this strategy is the engaging of key forest management bodies and other stakeholders to mitigate threats and conduct baseline and endline stakeholder surveys to inform future project development.
Finally, landowners participated in monitoring sessions, while they also attended training sessions on GPS use, branch pruning, and reducing seedling mortality. Finally, 16 meetings and training sessions were held with key forest management bodies on topics ranging from local law creation to fire mitigation and prevention.
To ensure long-term protection of the SLLF, SEED will continue working with local communities to address unsustainable resource use by establishing a community Acacia plantation, along with a joint management committee.
