Sowing the Seeds of Enterprise in Kapasa Village

By Francis Mbewe | Project Leader

In the quiet, close-knit community of Kapasa Village, Lister  was known for her resilience. A widowed mother of three, she worked tirelessly on her small plot of land, but the unpredictable rains and modest harvests meant that survival was a constant struggle. Her dream was simple yet seemed impossibly out of reach: to provide a stable life for her children, ensure they never had to leave school, and have a small cushion for emergencies.

Lister had an idea. She noticed that many in her village traveled to the distant market to buy chickens and eggs. She had the skill and the space to raise poultry, but she lacked the one thing that could turn her idea into a reality: capital. With no savings, the cost of buying healthy birds, quality feed, and materials for a secure coop was a barrier she couldn't overcome on her own.

This is where your support created a turning point. Through a microloan program you helped fund, Lister received a small loan. It wasn't a gift, but an investment—a vote of confidence in her ability and her vision.

With the funds, Lister immediately put her plan into action. She purchased twenty healthy chicks, bags of nutritious feed, and the necessary wire mesh to build a sturdy, predator-proof coop. Her days became even busier, but now they were filled with purpose and optimism. She tended to her flock with meticulous care, and soon, her investment began to bear fruit—first in the form of fresh, healthy eggs.

She started by selling the eggs to her immediate neighbors. The demand was instant. Her eggs were fresher and more convenient than those from the distant market. As her flock grew, so did her customer base. She reinvested her profits, buying more birds and expanding her operation. Within six months, Lister was not only selling eggs but also supplying grown chickens to local lodges and guesthouses.

The impact of this small loan has been transformative. For the first time, Lister has a steady, reliable income. She can consistently afford her children's school fees and uniforms. Her family now eats a more nutritious diet, including the protein from their own eggs. She has paid back her initial loan, allowing another woman in her community to have the same opportunity, and she is now saving to one day build a small grocery shop.

Lister’s success has created a ripple effect in Kapasa. She has become a role model, her story a testament to what is possible when a woman with a plan is given a chance. Your contribution was more than just money; it was the seed capital for a family's future and an inspiration for an entire community. Thank you for believing in the power of women to create their own path to prosperity.
