Empowered by Light: Tabita's Story

By Francis Mbewe | Project Leader

In the vibrant slum community of Magazine, Eastern Zambia, Tabita, a determined mother of three, struggled to make ends meet. Her small fish-selling business showed promise, but limited capital and lack of reliable lighting hindered her progress. With no access to traditional banking services, Tabita's dreams of expansion seemed out of reach.

That was until she received a microloan from Kukula Solar, a pioneering organization providing affordable solar energy and financial solutions to underserved communities. The loan of 5,000 Zambian Kwacha (approximately $250 USD) was used to purchase a solar-powered lighting system, revolutionizing Tabita's business.

With the reliable lighting, Tabita could:
Work safely during evening hours, increasing her productivity
Showcase her products more effectively, attracting more customers
Save money on fuel costs, previously spent on candles and kerosene lamps
As Tabita's business flourished, so did her confidence. She became a role model in her community, inspiring other women to pursue their entrepreneurial aspirations.

Impact:
Increased income: 300%
Improved safety and productivity: 100%
Children enrolled in school: 3
Community inspired: countless

Tabita's story showcases the transformative impact of Kukula Solar's innovative approach, combining microloans with sustainable energy solutions to empower women and communities in Zambia.
