Provide 20 Eco-Houses For the Underprivileged (685

The new home
The new home

We are proud to share that, thanks to the continued support of our donor community, one more eco-house has been completed under the “Provide 20 Eco-houses for the underprivileged” project. This time, the new home belongs to Mr. Tran Van Duong (born 1985) and his family in Can Tho province (formerly Thuan Hung Commune, Long My District, Hau Giang Province). Mr. Duong and his wife, Mrs. Luom, are raising two young children: a third-grade daughter and a three-year-old son. The family is classified as poor. They own no farmland, only a 200m² residential plot. Mrs. Luom earns about USD 2.5 per day selling herbal drinks. Mr. Duong works as a construction helper with unstable employment, earning USD 12 per day but only 15–20 working days per month. Their income is fragile, just like the house they once lived in.

Before the support, the family stayed in a 30m² temporary wooden house with a leaking roof and tilted walls. During heavy rains and storms, sleep was impossible. The children often huddled together when strong winds shook the structure. Safety was never guaranteed. In response to their situation, Mekong Plus, in coordination with its local partner - Anh Duong Center and the local communities, implemented a pilot recycled plastic house model for the family. The new house measures 45m², with a total cost of approximately USD 4,800, including:

- Local authorities contributed: USD 1200

- The family contributed: USD 1200

- Mekong Plus and donor partners contributed: USD 2400

This shared contribution reflects the strong spirit of community participation and sustainability that defines our project. What makes this house truly special is its eco-friendly construction:

- 25 recycled plastic roofing panels

- 220 recycled plastic wall panels

- Nearly 2 tons of plastic waste were recycled into durable building materials. What once polluted the environment now forms safe walls and a secure roof for a family in need.

This is not only social support,  it is a commitment to green, sustainable living. On the day he received the house, Mr. Duong shared emotionally: “From now on, we no longer fear the rain and storms. Thank you to the local authorities, Mekong Plus, and all the donors for giving my family a real home.” Today, Mr. Duong and his wife can focus on working and caring for their children without the constant anxiety of collapse during the next storm. Their daughter now has a quiet place to study. Their youngest child can sleep safely at night.

However, while we celebrate this achievement, many families in the community are still waiting. Demand for safe housing remains extremely high, especially as Vietnam faces increasingly severe storms and flooding each year. Every completed home reminds us how urgent this mission remains.

So far, we have completed 2 out of the 20 planned eco-houses. Eighteen families are still hoping for the same opportunity. Your support makes this possible. When donors, local authorities, communities, and families join hands, transformation happens. We warmly invite you to continue walking this journey with us. A contribution of any size helps bring the next family closer to safety, dignity, and stability.

Together, we can turn recycled plastic into protection - Together, we can turn vulnerability into hope.

Thank you for standing with us.
