Summary

The COVID-19 crisis has devastated lives across the globe -- and has been especially brutal for the poor in rural Rajasthan, India. People from this arid region often migrate to distant cities to find work in order to support their families. The lockdown due to COVID-19 this past spring forced these migrant workers to return home. They have little food or money, and no work. The Barefoot College Tilonia has responded by organizing relief efforts in these rural communities.

Challenge

With transportation shut down due to the lockdown, these migrant workers had to walk home. With little food or water, many perished along the way, while others were forbidden to beg or work. Without work, they have no money and little food. The Barefoot College Tilonia has responded by organizing relief efforts in these rural communities. Food and provisions for families, nutritional supplements for children, soap and face masks are part of the survival kits that the College is distributing.

Solution

Food rations are procured and distributed by community support teams from the Barefoot College Tilonia. More than one million men, women and children in the villages in the region surrounding Tilonia will have survived because of the survival kits provided by the Barefoot College Tilonia since last spring. Our fundraising goal of $30,000 will provide 450,000 meals to these rural families eliminating hunger and enabling their survival until they can resume work.

Long-Term Impact

Each survival kit enables a family of 5 to survive for 15 days at a cost of just $35. The kit includes a dry ration (daily staples of wheat flour, vegetables, basic condiments, locally produced iron supplement), and a sanitary kit (hand sanitizer, reusable masks, and sanitary pads). With food, nutritional supplements, and hygiene supplies, these families can survive the pandemic. Thank you for your generous support.
