Summary

This project will fund the purchase of 320 desk/chair sets for a secondary school in Western Tanzania. In 2015, we opened Amahoro Secondary School. As enrollment numbers grew, so did the demand for desks and chairs for the students. Presently, 320 students are still sharing seats or sitting on rocks on the floor. The government funds for this school are not meeting the needs. This campaign aims to support the community and school to make sure that each student has his or her own learning station

Challenge

Amahoro Secondary School is a new school that opened In 2015. Just as the school opened, the government waived school fees for secondary students. One negative impact of waiving fees was the loss of financial support to schools for items like desks and chairs. Each year, the government sends another 100+ students to study at Amahoro. Now 320 students are without desks and chairs -- often sitting on rocks or on the floor. This campaign will directly fund desk/chair sets for the classrooms.

Solution

This project directly targets the problem. Every dollar will go directly to the purchase of desk/chair sets for the classrooms at Amahoro Secondary School. Local carpenters are contracted to make the furniture, which contributes to the local economy. But most importantly, the students will study with dignity as they sit at their own desk--comfortable as they listen to lectures, take exams, work with partners, etc.

Long-Term Impact

Because Amahoro Secondary School is new, it has no furniture (desks/chairs). As of this year, the school has students in each class: Form 1, 2, 3, and 4. This campaign equips the classrooms with desk/chair sets for all students. As students graduate, the desks and chairs stay behind for future students. Hundreds of students will benefit--will be supported as they learn, thus impacting the larger community as these young people grow up to be educated, contributing members of their society.
