First Round of Desks Constructed and Delivered!

Kate's Desks
Kate's Desks

Dear Project Wezesha Supporters,

We're happy to share our first update from the desk/chair campaign for Amahoro Secondary School.

First of all, we are truly humbled and grateful for the outpouring of support. Our volunteer extraordinnaire, Kate sent out a rally cry to which you all responded with enthusiasm and generosity. Within days, we raised a few thousand dollars. Currently, we have raised $8,200 of our $12,000 through GlobalGiving with additional funds coming directly to Kate in Tanzania.

As many of you know, Kate was living in Mgaraganza village and teaching at Amahoro Secondary School. She took photos of the students sitting on bricks and 2x4 boards to share what she was seeing daily in her classes. Rightly so, she just couldn't stand it anymore and thus decided to do something. (Kate is quite the doer!!) So she started this campaign with a concrete goal -- raise $12,000 and buy 320 desks/chairs.

Fortunately, on the VERY LAST day that Kate was in the village, prior to returning home to the US, the big truck with 75 desks and chairs made its arrival. The students were eager and willing to help unload and get the desks into the classroom.

The fulfillment of this order took some time since each desk/chair set is built by hand by carpenters in Kigoma town.  We are planning to roll out orders of 75 desk/chair sets at a time so that it's a manageable request for the carpenters. Kate also noted that the school isn't short 250 desks/chairs this year since the current Form 4 class is smaller. Nonetheless, we'll keep moving along with orders until each student has a place of his or her own.

Thank you so much for your enthusiastic support. We are still short by a few thousand dollars, so please consider sharing this project with friends and family. Remember Kate's simple request of creating a giving chain -- you buy one desk/chair set @ $35 and ask a friend to do the same, with each donor sending the request to another. The chain reaction of $35 donations helps us reach our ultimate goal!

Enjoy the pics -- especially the one of Kate's glowing smile! What a great parting gift for her to see this come to fruition before saying goodbye to her students, colleagues, and friends at the school.

Of course, super big THANK YOU -- ASANTE SANA -- URAKOZE CANE to KATE!!!

With gratitude,
