Summary

Humla is the remotest district in Nepal situated in the far NW of the country. It is very poor with little or no basic infrastructure and a third of children die before their 5th birthday. Our aim is to help bring some stability by providing better education facilities especially for those children who live too far away from existing government schools and cannot travel on a daily basis and in the bitter mountain climate

Challenge

The current government education system is very thinly spread and does not cater for the remoter areas such as Humla. Young children cannot attend school because of the distances involved and this is made worse by the harsh climate. The problem was partly solved by starting, in 2012, a hostel school where children could stay overnight and receive an education. Numbers have rapidly increased from 15 children to over 50 today. Predicted demand is for over 100 children.

Solution

This project will provide an opportunity for children not catered for by the government system to receive education, good nutrition and safe accommodation with a healthier lifestyle. It will also help protect young girls from being trafficked to neighbouring countries. It is popular with parents as they see their children acquiring the ability to succeed in life.

Long-Term Impact

It is planned to increase the number of children to 100 at which point the curriculum will be extended to secondary grade. Self sufficiency through community and business support will form a model for other remote communities to adopt and slow down the rate of depopulation. Better education will open up economic opportunities with China just to the north.
