World Malaria Day: Bed Nets Distributed in Yoke Village

By Amy Baty-Herbert | Project Coordinator

Today, April 25, is World Malaria Day and this year’s theme is “Time to deliver zero malaria: invest, innovate, implement.”

Key Facts from https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/malaria

  • In 2021, nearly half of the world's population was at risk of malaria.
  • That year, there were an estimated 247 million cases of malaria worldwide.
  • The estimated number of malaria deaths stood at 619,000 in 2021.
  • The WHO African Region carries a disproportionately high share of the global malaria burden. In 2021, the Region was home to 95% of malaria cases and 96% of malaria deaths. Children under 5 accounted for about 80% of all malaria deaths in the Region.

Malaria is a life-threatening disease spread to humans by some types of mosquitoes. Most cases and deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa.  It is preventable and curable.

The statistics are alarming, but the good news as quoted above "Malaria is preventable and curable". One proven way to reduce the risk of malaria is with bed nets aka mosquito nets aka insecticide-treated nets. Bed nets create an effective barrier and provide protection from mosquito bites for up to three years hence preventing Malaria and reducing the burden of Malaria in Sierra Leone.

Bed nets were recently distributed to students and families in the Yoke Village. Each individual and family was very grateful to receive the insecticide-treated nets.

Your ongoing support will help invest, innovate, and implement the zero malaria theme by continuing to provide bed nets to families and individuals in Sierra Leone and to protect them from Malaria.

Please share this with your contacts and invite them to consider supporting this ongoing project. Copy and paste the text below on your social media or create your text.
