Prevent Malaria in Sierra Leone with Mosquito Nets

For many families in Sierra Leone, a mosquito net is more than a simple household item. It is an important layer of protection during the hours when families are sleeping and most vulnerable to mosquito bites.

Sleeping under a properly used mosquito net provides a physical barrier between people and mosquitoes. Consistent use can help reduce exposure to mosquito bites and is an important part of malaria prevention.

The most commonly used mosquito nets in Sierra Leone include ring (conical) nets and rectangular (square) nets. Both provide protection, but their designs make them suitable for different sleeping arrangements and household conditions.

Ring nets are particularly popular because they are simple to install. They typically require only one hanging point from the ceiling or roof.  This makes them especially practical for homes where space is limited or where it is difficult to install multiple attachment points.

Rectangular nets generally require four hanging points, but they provide more interior space and can work well over larger beds. They are often preferred for double beds or more permanent sleeping arrangements where there is sufficient space for installation.

During a recent distribution, each beneficiary received a mosquito net along with guidance on proper use.

Recipients shared heartfelt appreciation for the support. For them, the nets represent more than material assistance—they provide greater peace of mind at bedtime and an added layer of protection for their families.

When a family receives a mosquito net, they receive something they can use every night to help protect themselves and their children.
