Subalo's Story
Subalo came to our programme at Tebibe Ghion hospital, he previously received treatment with Project Harar for his cleft lip and returned with his mother Adugnein and father Dassie. The family travelled a long distance from for Subalo to get his cleft palate treated. The significant journeys un- dertaken by many children to reach our programs exemplify the vital role of our outreach efforts. These journeys underscore the importance of ensuring equal access
to treatment for children, regardless of their geographic location. Our commitment to reaching communities in remote areas helps bridge the gap and provides hope and life-changing treatment to those who need it most.
The family expresses their gratitude, telling us “They are very happy that he had received cleft palate treatment for the second time and have great respect for Project Harar”. They explained to us that his cleft lip surgery, which he had previously received with us, has had a significant positive impact on his overall well-being.
The family also shares their concerns about Subalo’s school experience prior to treatment, fearing ridicule and discrimination from his peers. However, with the intervention and support of Project Harar Ethiopia, they now feel a renewed sense of hope and confidence as Subalo can pursue his education without the burden of his condition, ensuring a brighter future for him.
Children with cleft lips often face significant stigma, which can have a profound impact on their educational opportunities. Ridicule and mistreatment from their peers can lead to isolation and exclusion, preventing these children from accessing the education they deserve and hindering their overall development. It is so important that children like Subalo get the treatment they need, so they can attend school, build friendships, and participate fully in the social and academic aspects of their lives.
Subalo’s family shares the heart-breaking experience of facing judgement and misconceptions from others, who wrongly attributed his cleft lip to a sin. However, after Subalo underwent cleft lip surgery, they joyfully note that people no longer stare or stigmatise him. This highlights the transformative power of cleft lip surgery, not only in improving physical appearance but also in dispelling societal prejudices and allowing children like Subalo to live free from unwarranted judgement.
