Johalan, a one-year-old child, travelled from the Gamo Zone to Arbaminch General Hospital for cleft lip surgery, arriving with his parents, who are both merchants. Johalan’s mother shares her experiences of raising him so far.
“I gave birth to Johalan in an ambulance on the way to Arbaminch Hospital. After he was born, I noticed his cleft condition because his mouth looked different when he cried. He was suffering from both a cleft lip and palate.”Johalan’s mother said that her baby was looked at a lot and that other members of their community said bad things about him. His parents stopped attending public gatherings such as weddings, meetings, and trips to the market with Johalan as they were scared of the rumours that may be spread about him. The parents kept their baby hidden in the house until after he received surgery.“I am very happy with my child's treatment. Johalan's health is in good condition after the surgery. All treatment and services we received were given to us for free, including our food, accommodation, and transportation costs.” Johalan’s Mother
