Challenge

There is a decline in school-funded art programs as well as a lack of art programs specifically designed for individuals with special needs in low-income neighborhoods south of Chicago. Ephraim's House seeks to be intentional about providing accessible adaptive art experiences to children with significant learning needs residing in these neighborhoods. Instead of spending summer at home, Ephraim's House will provide them with a place to express their unique voices and cultivate their creativity.

Solution

We teach children how to engage in the visual arts process safely and accessibly. Each session includes time spent cultivating communication, creativity, and confidence through participation in the creative process. The heart of Ephraim's is to help participants find their voice and cultivate their creativity while challenging participants to share their voice through the joy of creating and learning in community.

Long-Term Impact

The project will provide 10 children with significant learning needs the opportunity to participate in a 4-week adaptive art enrichment program, helping them discover hidden gifts, talents and healthy effective ways to express and communicate. In turn, this gives their families' new perspectives on how to cultivate and build skills in the areas of communication, creativity, and confidence at home.
