Global Mamas puts an emphasis on creating a space for women to succeed and achieve financial independence by following fair trade practices and supporting a safe and empowering work environment for women producers.
Because of your generous and continued support, we have completed the first Fair Trade Zone building for the Global Mamas batikers. However, due to rising building costs, we were unable to complete the next phase of the building, a covered outdoor space for weavers. Without this dedicated space, productivity is extremely limited as the Mamas must reposition weaving looms to avoid working in the direct sun and rain. We humbly request your support to complete this next phase.
We will create a holistic, covered outdoor production space specifically for weavers, designed with direct input from the Mamas. Like the batiking area, this space will be open-air and filled with natural light. Weavers will have a dedicated space where they will be able to work without repositioning the heavy looms to avoid the batiking space or harsh weather. Landscaping will create natural outdoor spaces for production and for the women to gather, eat, and rejuvenate during the workday.
Once these production areas are constructed we are proud to say that Phase I of the Fair Trade Zone will be complete after nearly a decade of planning, development, fundraising, & construction. By the end of 2022 the Fair Trade Zone will provide sustainable livelihoods to over 150 batikers, seamstresses, weavers, hyacinth harvesters, bead makers & assemblers. Even better, the Fair Trade Zone will be a safe and empowering workplace for all, including the hard working batikers of Global Mamas.
