Summary

In Africa, horses and donkeys are often over-worked & not provided the care-food & vet treatment-they need. Harness equipment is often of poor quality & causes needless pain. These animals who labor for their owners, often die of treatable ailments or continue to work while suffering. Animal-Kind Int'l partner organizations in Ghana & Tanzania provide care for the animals & training to their owners to help improve the lives of the animals & change the conditions under which the animals toil.

Challenge

Working equines in Africa are often forced to work until they drop. They are not provided with good food, rest, water, & basic care. Equipment is of poor quality, making the work done by horses & donkeys much more painful than it needs to be. Not only do the animals suffer, their owners do as well if the animal is no longer able to perform. Animal-Kind Int'l has 2 partner organizations in Africa that are addressing this problem-the Ghana SPCA-Horse Project & Tanzania Animal Welfare Society.

Solution

The project will purchase basic materials and supplies to treat horses and donkeys; will train owners to provide basic care for their working equines; will train vets and para-vets (community animal workers) to provide care; will provide care for retired & abandoned horses in Ghana; and in Tanzania, will hold free clinics for working equines-these typically treat about 100 animals in a 1-day clinic. These free clinics are the only way that owners of working equines are able to access vet care.

Long-Term Impact

Typically, owners of donkeys and horses do not know how to provide proper care for their working equines; there are too few professionals in Africa who are trained to care for donkeys and horses; there are not enough services that provide effective, efficient, and affordable care for donkeys and horses. We address these needs by acquiring supplies and by providing training to owners, para-vets & vets, and by holding free clinics.
