Partners in Development (PID) has been working in Haiti since 1990 and providing free medical care in our clinic to the community in Port-au-Prince since 2002. The clinic provides doctor consultations, labs, medicine, and wound care, as well as education programs for diabetic, hypertensive, sickle cell, and prenatal patients. All services are entirely free to ensure even the poorest families can have access to quality medical care.
Haiti is one of the Western Hemisphere's poorest countries and has been plagued by natural disasters and civil unrest. Currently Haiti is facing a crisis of insecurity with rampant gang violence and kidnappings. Medical care of any kind has been difficult to access in Port-au-Prince. Gangs have forced many hospitals to close and others are too expensive for many to access. This project, PID's clinic, is one of the few health care centers that has remained open despite the crisis.
PID's clinic is open 5 days a week and serves over 1,200 patients a month. We offer education to our patients about a variety of health conditions. Our education programs serve over 80 diabetic patients and over 50 hypertensive patients. We see 300 new prenatal patients per month, who we follow up at our clinic or at home through community midwives that PID has trained. We provide 150 safe birthing kits a month to our trained midwives. We provide nutritional supplements to malnourished children.
This project makes high quality health care accessible to Haitians living in poverty during the unrest and beyond, preventing unnecessary deaths and creating a healthier community. We employ all local staff who make an impact in their community as well as for their own families. During the current anarchy PID's clinic is the sole source of medical care for this population. When the current crisis improves, PID will continue to provide vital medical care and health education for this community.
