Summary

Our response will provide emergency provisions to those worst affected by the looting & fires. This includes families who have lost their income, micro and family run businesses that have lost their livelihoods, essential workers who are unable to return home to care for their families. For businesses and community doctors whose premises were looted and burnt, we will assist in re-establishing their businesses through cash contributions and supply chain support.

Challenge

The looting and fires in KZN and Gauteng has led to the burning of shops, warehouses, trucks, doctor's rooms, & in some instances, reservoirs. Panic buying at remaining stores has set in, & people queue for hours for essentials. Many are turned away as stock runs out. Community doctors have no practices or equipment to service their patients and micro business owners have lost their livelihoods & staff have lost their income. Those who have no jobs to return to are subsequently food insecure.

Solution

Gift of the Givers have identified recipients for emergency supply of food, toiletries, baby diapers and formula, etc. This includes families who have lost incomes who now cannot afford to stock up on supplies, and smaller communities that have totally lost their grocery stores. For small businesses and medical practices we will help to rebuild their business through cash donations. For essential workers who remain onsite, we will provide relief aid to the facilities they are stationed at.

Long-Term Impact

Businesses covered by insurance will only receive their payout over the next two years, yet their costs remain. By providing cash and helping them rebuild their businesses, the goods and services they provide within communities will strengthen personal livelihoods and the micro economy. Doctors who have lost their practices and equipment are unable to assist the community. As we support them in re-establishing their practices, we are helping the larger community with essential medical services.
