Provide financial life-line in Togo and Kenya

Background

Together we can empower individuals in Africa who are interested in creating small businesses. This will give them the opportunity to get out of poverty and help in the development of their community through boosting economic development. We will provide small loans for business investments as well as training and coaching to entrepreneurs in the rural areas of the Maritime Region in Togo. In February 2021, we reached our initial funding goal of USD 10,000 and we have now raised the target.

Stakeholder collaboration

For Action10 and HR&S, managing stakeholder relationships is of the utmost importance, and we constantly aim to be a trust-worthy and capable partner. Three of these are the Target Partners we work with, the donors, as well as international and national implementing partners.

• From the point of view of the Target Partner we build the collaboration programme on the ambition of our partner, on their their challenges and on their network and understanding of the local situation.

• From the point of view of the investors we work with risk/return & impact ratios. Investors need to know that the funds and effort they contributed with is well managed so that money is not lost and sustainable impact is ensured. Thus, HR&S is developing tools for risk assessment and risk mitigation.

• HR&S offers the service of both the international and national implementing partners; HR&S HQ together with Action10 operates as the international implementing partners and HR&S Country branches operates as the national implementing partners.

We empower every key stakeholder; through our development programmes, our target partners in lower income countries and our investors, as well as the international and the national implementing partners.

Project update

Action10, HR&S and our partners constantly seek to gain knowledge that can help us improving our projects and long-term positive impact. To gain and share more knowledge, one of Action10's volunteers, Freja, conducted a field study to learn more about women working with agriculture. One of the main challenges identified is the current drought conditions which negatively affects their ability to work and to earn income. Moreover, climate change adds to this challenge, especially for smaller scale agriculture which is more dependent on specific rain seasons. Apart from the decreased income, this also causes stress and makes it more difficult to plan ahead.

The bright spots are that there are methods that can partly solve these challenges. In Kenya, for example, they use methods to preserve water in the soil, plant trees to lower the negative impact climate change has on the agriculture process, and use crop rotation. However, although there are temporary solutions, the farmers are in need of organisations that possess local knowledge. Organisations that can provide a marketplace to increase demand for the farmers' products are also critical.
