As a wildlife orphanage, DAKTARI plays a key role in rescuing and looking after orphaned animals that need special care and attention to survive.
The recent rains have begun to restore the bush to is summertime state, resulting in turning it to vibrant green colour and flourishing trees. With the rain comes the babies, and while we had seen many happy families roaming around the farm, we also sadly found some abandoned babies that we urgently took our care.
We recently stumbled upon an abandoned litter of two African Wild Cat kittens near the DAKTARI camp site. The decision to rescue, home and release them in the near future was taken. It won’t be long till the kittens become cats and their instinct to hunt small rodents, birds, frogs and at times small antelope will take over. We promise to keep you all updated as to the progress of Bonnie and Clyde.
A few weeks later, we happened to have two young squirrels falling off the roof of a chalet in camp on the very same day. The stunned babies have been immediately taken care of and with a lot of love care, a few days later they were playing around and eating well. We are planning to release them very soon, and we can't wait to see them around camp with all the other squirrels we already have!
After a violent storm and heavy rains, a baby mongoose had been found alone by some nearby people. They called us to take care of it, which we are doing. Goose is very vocal and has a lot of energy and is already starting to dig and climb everywhere. He loves cuddles and attention, which we are more than happy to give him!
Last but not least, a baby duiker had been found by people in the communities that had been to DAKTARI before and they thought the best thing to do was to call us to rescue him. And we are glad they did! Wally is only a few weeks old but he is doing really well and is adjusting well to his new environment.
We will keep you updated on when, where and how we are going to release them!
