Dear Sponsors,
Summer has arrived at DAKTARI, and with the rains, the bush is coming back to life!
Fresh green grass is sprouting, and the trees are starting to show their first buds. This makes us so happy, knowing that the giraffes, nyalas, zebras, and warthogs on our reserve will now have an easier time finding food after the dry winter months.
Unfortunately, we also have some sad news to share. Our beloved mongoose, Pepi, has passed away. In his last days, he behaved differently, sleeping a lot and refusing his favourite treats. Our vet examined him and did his best to help, but despite all care and love, Pepi didn’t recover and sadly passed away. To be safe, we sent him for a rabies test, which thankfully came back negative. We now focus on ensuring that our remaining mongooses, Moon and Goose, stay healthy and happy.
There has also been quite an adventure with our serval enclosure! After the renovations we mentioned in our previous update, it seems our buffaloes liked it a bit too much—they decided to visit at night and ended up completely damaging the enclosure. Poor Scruffball, our serval, was frightened and escaped. We have since installed camera traps around the area and are keeping an eye out for him, hoping he will soon return safely to his home.
Meanwhile, summer has brought a joyful baby boom! Around our camp, the vervet monkeys have been welcoming many new little ones - more than 20 tiny babies! They are playful, mischievous, and sometimes cause a bit of chaos, but their charm makes it impossible not to smile.
We have also noticed some romance in the air - our rock monitors have been seen courting, and we are hoping for new little monitors in the near future. Nature truly never stops amazing us!
We are so grateful for your ongoing support. Your donations make it possible for us to care for these animals through every season, whether it’s providing vet care, maintaining enclosures, or keeping our rescued friends safe and comfortable.
If you, or someone you know, would like to come experience this special place in person, DAKTARI is always ready to welcome new volunteers.
Together with our children, animals, and team, we thank you for helping us keep their lives healthy, safe, and full of love.
