Rain, Resilience and New Little Lives

By Felicia Hansen | Fundraising Manager

Dear Sponsors,

January reminded us once again that nature can be both beautiful and powerful.

In mid-January we received heavy rains, and unfortunately our bridge collapsed under the pressure of the water. It was a stressful time for all of us. Sadly, two of our beloved meerkats did not make it. It was heartbreaking for the team. Thankfully, all our other animals and humans remained safe and healthy.

As soon as the ground began to dry, we immediately started repairing and restoring the areas that were most affected. The ostrich enclosure suffered quite a bit from the flooding, but we are happy to say it is now back to normal. Step by step, everything is returning to its rhythm.

The summer rains also mean one thing in Limpopo: grass grows wildly. We have been very busy maintaining Telo’s lion enclosure so the grass does not become too high. We still want our handsome boy to see what is going on around him. In one of the photos you will see him proudly enjoying a piece of meat, completely unaware that his gardeners are working overtime for him.

There has also been joyful news. Since December, we welcomed a little orphaned dassie named Eric. In May he will turn one year old. He has settled beautifully at DAKTARI and has already won many hearts. The children absolutely adore him, and through him they learn about compassion, responsibility and wildlife care.

Another lovely addition to DAKTARI is our new chickens. Every day, the children help collect the eggs during stabling, which we do twice per day. It has become a wonderful learning experience. Caring for the chickens teaches consistency and responsibility, and collecting warm eggs in the morning has quickly become a favourite activity.

And finally, a small but beautiful moment from the bush. We recently found a tiny bush baby alone and were concerned he had been abandoned. We kept a careful eye from a distance, and not long after, his mother returned and carried him safely away. A perfect reminder that sometimes, nature just needs a little space to do its work.

Thank you for helping us keep our rescued animals healthy, safe and cared for through storms, sunshine and everything in between. Your support allows us to respond when challenges arise and to celebrate the many small joys that come with life in the bush.
