Summary

Young victims of sex trafficking not only endure sexual trauma but also face many challenges in trying to rebuild their lives. Unexpected financial burdens can include medical care, unplanned pregnancy as the result of abuse, counseling, and transitional housing- as the trauma is often perpetrated or aided by family members. Our team, led by Vital Voices Human Rights Global Leader, Boom Mosby, assists children under 18 years old (as young as 3 years old) to find hope and healing from abuse.

Challenge

Many of our young clients are struggling to survive childhood and shouldering the responsibilities of adulthood at the same time. For example, one Thai girl's childhood ended abruptly at the age of 12 because of the actions of someone she trusted. "Jane's" nightmare began when she was abused by her step-father in 2018. In that instant, her childhood was taken; replaced by realities and responsibilities no young child should have to face.

Solution

In Jane's case, despite family support, she struggles with depression and has tried to commit to suicide due to the overwhelming burdens of childcare, schooling and limited monetary support from her grandmother who earns $25 a month selling items. However, Jane's dream remains alive. After the birth of her child (a result of the abuse) her schooling resumed in 2020. She hopes that her dreams can come true if she can continue her schooling without having to stop to help support her grandmother.

Long-Term Impact

In addition to the re-traumatization of facing their trafficker/abuser and testifying in court, many of our young clients are also confronted with difficult financial realities. Like Jane, they dream of an education and a brighter future for themselves and their children. Financial support will provide not only for immediate needs (food, clothing, shelter, medical care, legal assistance), but will also have a lasting impact on the life trajectory of young abuse victims and their families.
